This film from the wizards at Pixar centers on Carl Fredericksen, a character far different from any of the animation company's previous heroes. Carl isn't a fish, or a toy, or a monster. Instead, Carl is simply a 78-year-old man, but his age doesn't keep him from having a rollicking adventure in this film featuring the voices of Ed Asner, Christopher Plummer, and Pixar favorite John Ratzenberger. At a time when too many animated films consist of anthropomorphized animals cracking sitcom one-liners and flatulence jokes, the warmth, originality, humor, and unflagging imagination of Up feel as welcome as rain in a desert. Carl Fredericksen (voice by Ed Asner) ranks among the most unlikely heroes in recent animation history. A 78- year-old curmudgeon, he enjoyed his modest life as a balloon seller because he shared it with his adventurous wife Ellie (Ellie Docter). But she died, leaving him with memories and the awareness that they never made their dream journey to Paradise Falls in South America. When well-meaning officials consign Carl to Shady Oaks Retirement Home, he rigs thousands of helium balloons to his house and floats to South America. The journey's scarcely begun when he discovers a stowaway: Russell (Jordan Nagai), a chubby, maladroit Wilderness Explorer Scout who's out to earn his Elderly Assistance Badge. In the tropical jungle, Carl and Russell find more than they bargained for: Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer), a crazed explorer whose newsreels once inspired Carl and Ellie; Kevin, an exotic bird with a weakness for chocolate; and Dug (Bob Peterson), an endearingly dim golden retriever fitted with a voice box. More importantly, the travelers discover they need each other: Russell needs a (grand)father figure; Carl needs someone to enliven his life without Ellie. Together, they learn that sharing ice-cream cones and counting the passing cars can be more meaningful than feats of daring-do and distant horizons. Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc. ) and Bob Peterson direct the film with consummate skill and taste, allowing the poignant moments to unfold without dialogue to Michael Giacchnio's vibrant score. Building on their work in The Incredibles and Ratatouille, the Pixar crew offers nuanced animation of the stylized characters. The next morning they wake up, hungover, in each other's bodies, and proceed to freak out! With time not on their side, Mitch and Dave comically struggle to avoid completely destroying each other's lives before they can find a way to get their old ones back. Every generation has a reflective body-swap comedy thrust upon it, with results ranging from the genteel Reagan-era George Burns vehicle 18 Again to the slyly empowering, cell phone-savvy remake of Freaky Friday. Fueled by two amazingly game performances from Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds, The Change-Up goes for the gross-out, happily wallowing where those previous films dared not tread. Whatever this says about the current state of society, there's no denying that the results are consistently, ridiculously funny. Kicking off with a gag involving a baby that might give even John Waters pause, director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) wastes no time getting to the gimmick, via a magical fountain that rearranges the brains of an uptight family-man lawyer (Bateman) and party-animal actor (Reynolds). What follows plays like a greatest-hits medley of the genre, shot through with a steadily escalating level of filth. (The reveal of Reynolds's girlfriend will not soon be forgotten/expunged.) Adept as the leads are, they also leave room in the spotlight for some killer supporting players, including Alan Arkin, Olivia Wilde, and especially Apatow vet Leslie Mann, who delivers two lengthy monologues that veer from sympathetic to gloriously bent without missing a beat. High art it most definitely ain't, but The Change-Up lands squarely in the borderland between offensive and hilarious, where the best shock comedies reside. A visually appealing film produced by Chris Meledandri (Ice Age, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, and Horton Hears a Who), Despicable Me is full of weirdly shaped characters and settings that are somehow a perfect fit for Sergio Pablos's story. What's especially refreshing is that in this film, 3-D effects are used skillfully and effectively: even when the effects are exploited for comic reasons, they don't become a distraction, as is all too common in many recent movies. The film is full of corny banter and silly antics that inspire plenty of spontaneous laughter, and the minions, while not the best-developed characters, sure are comical. Ultimately, there's also a wholesome message about following one's heart. Steve Carell is the perfect villain-gone-soft in his role as Gru, Jason Segal is quite funny as Vector, and Julie Andrews makes a surprising appearance as Gru's very un-motherly mom. The story isn't new, the humor is relatively juvenile and somewhat forgettable, and it's no Toy Story 3, but Despicable Me celebrates silliness in a way that's satisfying and highly entertaining.
