Chuck Jones and other great studio animators sneered at the cheap look and lazy craftsmanship of Hanna Barbera's television cartoons in the 1960s, but there's no question HB's original, 35-year-old Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! is enduringly beloved. The Complete First and Second Seasons includes all 25 stories first broadcast from September '69 to October '71, a growth period in which canine hero Scooby's voice (by Don Messick, who also voiced The Jetsons's pup, Astro) was gradually refined from murky garble to Scoob's more familiar, "Rrroowwrr"-inflected, human-like speech. This set also represents the pre-frills Scooby-Doo: no guest appearances by Don Knotts or Batman, no Scrappy-Doo--just adventure and occasional bubblegum pop tunes by Danny Janssen and sundry co-writers (e.g., "Pretty Mary Sunlite" in the episode "Don't Fool with a Phantom"). Watching all the shows back-to-back reveals evolving complexity in the scripts. Over time, Scooby-Doo's creators added multiple bad guys in cahoots with major villains, and developed sub-plots, backstories, and even appealing allies and friends of Mystery, Inc., a traveling band of young debunkers of supernatural phenomena. Riding around in their psychedelic Mystery Van, preppie leader Fred and his friends--haughty Daphne, brainy Velma, quasi-hippie Shaggy, and Shaggy's best pal, Scooby, an excitable Great Dane--chase down and are chased by alleged ghouls who generally turn out to be venal humans running various scams. Included here is Scooby-Doo's premiere, "What a Night for a Knight," in which the gang looks into the disappearance of a noted archaeologist and end up in a "haunted" museum. The fun "Go Away Ghost Ship" finds our heroes helping a shipping company daunted by the apparent ghost of pirate Red Beard, while the silly classic "A Tiki Scare Is No Fair" concerns a Hawaiian vacation for Mystery, Inc. disrupted by a witch doctor. --Tom Keogh

Clever sleuthing has led you to treasure: the very first season of What's New Scooby-Doo? Enjoy all 13 episodes of spoofy hilarity and mystery with the crime-busting gang --from scary snowboarding in There's No Creature Like Snow Creature to the season finale The Unnatural, with the voices of real-life baseball greats Mike Piazza and Luis Santiago. As Scooby-Doo fans know, popular stars often lend their vocal talents in such takeoffs as Riva Ras Regas (co-starring teen pop singer Lindsay Pagano) and American pop idol JC Chasez from super group *NSYNC. But everyone knows who the biggest heartthrob of the show is really...who else? Scooby-Doo!

Mystery, suspense, and crazy chases abound as Fred, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo renew their commitment to solving mysteries in this 2002 sequel to the original 1969 Scooby Doo television series. Marking a return to the mystery gang's initial five members after several seasons that included additional characters like Scooby-Dum and Scrappy, the What's New, Scooby-Doo series plays much like the original series despite being animated by Warner Brothers Television Animation rather than Hanna-Barbera. Fred, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo show some signs of maturation and growth since their inception, but the mystery gang is essentially still the same quirky, tight-knit group that stumbles inadvertently into one mystery after another and plunges in to investigate and unmask the villain(s) behind each strange happening. What's new in this 2002 series is the gang's utilization of high-tech gadgets like global positioning devices and laptop computers (though they still drive the same old mystery van) and their foes' crafty use of technological innovations like wireless remote controls and virtual reality gear. Add in updated popular music and guest stars like baseball great Mike Piazza and teen pop singer Lindsay Pagano and What's New, Scooby-Doo becomes attractive to a whole new generation of fans. The thirteen episodes in season one span the globe from icy snowboarding slopes to the jungles of Costa Rica, glitzy hotels of Las Vegas, and a game preserve in Africa. Bonus features include bloopers and a bonus 2005 episode "A Scooby-Doo Valentine" that stars NSYNC's J.C. Chasez. (Ages 5 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Inspired by the 1969 to 1972 Hanna-Barbera Scooby-Doo Where Are You? television series, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo aired on television in the late 1980's and early 1990's and features Shaggy, Fred, Velma, and Daphne as junior-high school students and Scooby as a pup. While the gang may be smaller in stature than in the previous series, their appetite for mystery (and pizza) is heartier than ever and bedtime never seems to stand in the way of solving a mystery. Knowing that monsters and ghosts don't exist doesn't seem to stop the gang from encountering everything from the enormous Chickenstein to Zombo the clown ghost, the sesame-seeded Burger monster, the hairy Bigwig, and even the slimy Snail monster. Scooby's nose for clues (and Scooby snacks) and Velma's logical thinking, combined with some bumbling help from the ever-hungry Shaggy, the Red Herring-blaming Fred, and the spoiled, Butler-invoking Daphne, always seem to be enough to unmask the villain and solve the mystery at the end of the day. There's always good chase in every episode, but the humor and comedy are more satirical and extreme than in the Scooby-Doo Where Are You? series which translates into less emphasis on the fright of the chase and more on the animation of bugging-out eyes and other frights of face. Notably, this collection features the one episode in which Red Herring actually proves to be the villain as well as an episode where Scooby, rather than Velma, solves the mystery. A Pup Named Scooby-Doo is set squarely in the late 1980's as is evidenced by its animation style, the music and dance that weave throughout the episodes, and Velma's stash of hi-tech equipment. Nonetheless, there are plenty of nods to the original series and the 1960's. The addition of the bonus 2006 "Party Arty" episode from the Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get A Clue series is a weird juxtaposition of startlingly different animation styles and is simply jarring.
